Police officers drafted to Oshodi, Lagos on Tuesday, shot at students of Lagos State University (LASU) who were peacefully protesting a hike in their school fees in order to disperse them.

Governor Babatunde Fashola had increased the protesters’ school fees with the approval of state in 2012. But Fashola had also recently announced that the state government was looking into the reduction demand by the students.

 www.www.aso.rocks search engine reports that since the increment of tuition from N25,000 to N193,750 for Education/Education;  N223,750 for Social and management science; N248,750 for Law  N238,750 for Communication/School of Transport,  N258,750 for Science; N283,750 for Engineering and N308,750 for College of medicine,  the institution had not witnessed peace.

Lecturers of the school are currently on an indefinite industrial action with part of their demands being a review of the school fees.

Fashola had said the state Executive Council was studying the suggestion for fees reduction by the students giving hopes that it could be reduced.

But the aggrieved students maintain that they do not trust the government and thus, would stage constant protests as reminders for the government that they have not relaxed.

However, while protesting on Tuesday, they clashed with the police who fired teargas canisters at them. Three students were injured while attempting to run to safety.

Leaders of the students have maintained that the protest would continue despite an order by the institution’s management that all the students should vacate the school immediately.
